Glyphosate misuse in long-standing orchards

Glyphosate అనేది glycine classకి చెందిన systemic non-selective కలుపు మందు. భారత్లో దీన్ని tea plantationsలో మాత్రమే వాడడానికి registered. తోటల్లో విస్తృతంగా off-label use జరగడంతో, 2022 నుంచి దాని అమ్మకం, వాడకాన్ని Government of India certified Pest Control Operatorsకి మాత్రమే పరిమితం చేసింది.

పనిచేసే విధానం
Glyphosate 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) ని inhibit చేస్తుంది; ఇది shikimate pathwayలో మొక్కలు, చాలా micro-organismsలో aromatic amino acids తయారుచేసే penultimate ఎంజైమ్. EPSPS లేకుండా మొక్క phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophanని synthesise చేయలేదు; ఆకలి వల్ల 7-14 రోజుల్లో చనిపోతుంది. ఈ ఎంజైమ్ జంతువుల్లో ఉండదు, అందుకే మాలిక్యూల్కి acute క్షీరదాల toxicity తక్కువ. ఈ మాలిక్యూల్ phloem ద్వారా చాలా systemic; అన్ని growing pointsకి — వేళ్ళు, రైజోమ్లు, దుంపలతో సహా — translocate అవుతుంది. అందుకే perennial కలుపు మీద ప్రాణాంతకంగా పనిచేస్తుంది. ఇదే systemic property — spray drift లేదా root uptake పండ్ల చెట్టు root zoneలోకి చేరితే తోటకి నష్టం కలిగించడానికి కారణం.
ఉపయోగం, రెగ్యులేటరీ స్థితి
Insecticides Act 1968 కింద CIBRCలో మొదట్నుంచి tea plantationsలో కలుపు నియంత్రణ కోసం మాత్రమే registered. నిమ్మ, మోసాంబి (బత్తాయి), మామిడి, ఇతర పండ్ల తోటల్లో canopy కింద పదేపదే off-label వాడడం వల్ల 4-5 సీజన్ల పాటు progressive root decline, తోట కుప్పకూలడం గమనించబడింది.
25 అక్టోబర్ 2022 గెజిట్ notification ప్రకారం, Government of India glyphosate వాడకాన్ని certified Pest Control Operators (PCOs) కి పరిమితం చేసింది; ప్రముఖంగా హెచ్చరిక లేబుల్లు చేర్చడానికి అన్ని తయారీదారులు తమ certificates of registrationని surrender చేయాలని CIBRC require చేసింది.
తోటల్లో ప్రత్యామ్నాయాలు
పండ్ల తోటల్లో canopy కింద, బండ్లపై కలుపు నియంత్రణకు safer ప్రత్యామ్నాయాలు — contact-only herbicides — Glufosinate Paraquat Bund Knockdown, Upl Sweep Power Glufosinate — root-zone exposure రాకుండా hood లేదా foam directed spray తో వాడాలి.
