Extra long staple (ELS) పత్తి — staple length 32 మిమీ, పైబడి — భారత పత్తిలో premium segment. fine count నూలు (80s పైబడి) — high-value fabrics, premium denim, ఎగుమతికి ఇది అవసరం. భారత్ ప్రపంచంలో అతిపెద్ద పత్తి producer అయినప్పటికీ — మొత్తం పత్తిలో true ELS చాలా తక్కువ (35 మిలియన్ bales లో 2-4 లక్ష bales మాత్రమే). అందుకే ఈజిప్ట్, అమెరికా నుండి ELS ను net importer గా ఉంది.

- DCH-32: intra-hirsutum × barbadense హైబ్రిడ్ — Agricultural Research Station, ధార్వాడ్ నుండి 1983 లో విడుదల. Staple length 33-36 మిమీ, micronaire 3.5-3.8, ginning out-turn ~34%. Dominant commercial ELS హైబ్రిడ్. కర్ణాటక (ధార్వాడ్, హావేరి, బెళగావి), తమిళనాడు, మహారాష్ట్రలో సాగు
- MCU-5: G. hirsutum రకం — Madurai-Coimbatore Unit-5 నుండి విడుదల. Staple length 30-32 మిమీ, ELS range లో lower boundary. తమిళనాడు వర్షాధార, partially irrigated ప్రాంతాలకు అనుకూలం
- CICR రకాలు: CCH-5363, Surabhi, SVPR-2 — AICRP కింద అదనపు ELS-range ఎంపికలు
ELS production ఎందుకు తగ్గింది
ELS రకాలను — Bollgard-II Bt trait తో backcross చేయలేదు; ఇది regulatory, commercial gap. Premium భారత textile mills (Coats, Vardhman, Trident, Loyal Textile, Arvind) — export-grade product కోసం ELS అవసరం. వారు తమ ELS ను 70-80% — Pima (USA), Giza (ఈజిప్ట్) imports ద్వారా source చేస్తారు. CITI, Texprocil — focused ELS revival కార్యక్రమం కోసం పదేపదే petition చేశాయి.
Revival ప్రయత్నాలు
ICAR-CICR — 2019 లో National ELS Cotton Mission ప్రతిపాదన మొదలుపెట్టింది. Textile మంత్రిత్వ శాఖ — Cotton Sector Development Scheme ప్రకటించింది. Targeted పరిశోధన: (a) ELS background లోకి Bt traits ను introgress చేయడం — pre-commercial trials; (b) HDPS కు compact ELS genotypes; (c) labour ఖర్చు తగ్గించడానికి మెకానికల్ picking-compatible రకాలు.
